Cardiac Surgery
Any surgical procedure involving the heart, performed to correct acquired or congenital defects, replace diseased valves, open or bypass blocked vessels, or graft a prosthesis or a transplant is considered cardiac surgery. The most common types of cardiac operations are those correcting blood supply blockages to the heart muscle (coronary artery bypass surgery ) and operations to repair blocked or leaking heart valves that impair heart pump performance (cardiac valve surgery).
Coronary Artery Bypass
Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) reroutes the blood supply around a blocked section of the artery that supplies the heart vital nutrients to function. During this procedure, surgeons remove healthy blood vessels from another part of the body, such as a leg or the chest wall. They then surgically attach the vessels to the diseased artery in such a way that the blood can flow around the blocked section. CABG has been proven to extend patients lives and lasts longer than stents. The operation generally takes 3- 5 hours and postoperatively the patient is recovered in the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit for 24 hours. Thereafter, the patient will transfer to the Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit for 3-5 days and then be discharged.

Transcatheter Valve Surgery
Depending on a number of factors, your surgeon may recommend Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) for stenosis or blockage of the aortic valve. TAVR is frequently employed in situations making traditional aortic valve surgery too risky for the patient. We have performed over 200 TAVR operations, serve as a training center for the operation and have presented our data at peer reviewed meetings.
